We do not write because we want to; we write because we have to.
-Somerset Maugham
I was a writer before I knew how to write. My family still teases me about how I used to carry around a notebook and a pencil when I was a toddler; as if my hands itched to put on paper the stories that were already swirling around in my head.
What makes someone a writer? It’s more than the ability to write, and more than a knowledge of grammar. A writer is someone who views the world through a prism of story.
Everyone has a story to tell. Finding it is what I do best.
How do I know a story when I see it? Story is that indefinable “it.” It’s the chill down your spine, the goose bumps on your arm. It’s the surge of emotion or the now-I-understand moment. It’s the big picture or the unique idea. It’s the David. And the Goliath.
Story is anything you can’t put down.
